My son and I read this book and loved it. Winsor has created a mystical universe that seems like a cross between Y2K and the Middle Ages, which is my son's current obsession. There are no knights but there are class conflicts, mystical elements, and friendships as the main characters try to save the world and the people they love. Good pacing, complex enough to hold the attention of a 10 year old without overhelming him, and easy to read aloud if you are lucky enough to have a child who still listens.Product details

This story hooks you with immediate tension when the main character, a boy named Cade, finds a Heartstone. This unleashes a whole series of events that draws him into a web of intrigue and the supernatural. The Heart stones are needed to stop a cataclysmic event that will occur at the new year. Cade is forced to choose between what he holds most dear, his family, and helping save the world as they know it.
The author does a great job showing Cade's growth as he has to sometimes do what is wrong to accomplish what is right, challenging the morals his parents have raised him with. The gods in the story play a role but they don't overwhelm the story or take away from the every day challenges and morals that everyone struggles with. Even though this is a fantasy novel, the fantasy elements are more physical, with the Heart stones affecting the balance of the earth's power. Even though Cade is a finder of the stones, he is an otherwise normal kid. The story itself is character and plot driven, keeping the magical elements in balance. Everyone, child and adult, faces the challenges of doing what is right for their family versus the world at large, and all will grow from having read this particular young man's story.
Interesting characters; fun read
Original story, good rhythm and interesting characters. A book I found hard to put down once I had started it. I can't wait for the next one.
Very unique story as it looks to the future in ways I have never thought of before. This book keeps you on your toes.
What a great read! I'd highly recommend it for kids who like adventure stories but as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed it from intriguing beginning to exciting climax and perfect ending. The story is fast-paced and action-packed but for me the book's strength is in the characters - Cade, Roth, Shan and all those they meet along the way, both good and bad. The interaction between them and the relationship between the brothers is fantastically well-written. Cade in particular is spot-on as a boy who only wants to do the best for his family but inadvertently ends up in a tough situation with some difficult decisions to make. His voice is feisty and sometimes irreverent, providing a few laughs along the way and some poignant moments too. The idea of Finders and the heart stones is very original and the world where these things are important feels very real. I'll definitely be looking out for more from this author.
This was a captivating story, with unique characters and situations that held my attention. I couldn't put it down! Once I started reading, I pretty much read the whole thing in one sitting! I look forward to more stories from this author.
